Stephan Moccio released Scenes from a Velvet Room (Deluxe Suite) on October 23 through Decca Records. The expanded collection adds five pieces to an album first issued in June, including Cuban Cigars and the Scent of Regret.
The project looks back to Moccio’s time playing piano in the lobby of Toronto’s Four Seasons hotel, before his later songwriting career. In the release statement, he describes that work as an education in reading a room and choosing music for the people occupying it.
The room as a compositional idea
That background gives the album a particular frame. A lounge pianist works with pace, space and changing attention, often deciding how much a performance should come forward and when it should recede. Those practical choices offer useful listening questions for a solo-piano collection, without assuming the recording reproduces a hotel performance literally.
The five additions can be approached alongside the original sequence: do they extend an existing mood, create a different ending or offer another view of the same setting? The answer depends on the music and order, rather than on the word “deluxe” alone.
Readers already familiar with the June album can use the new track list to identify the additional pieces. New listeners have the option of following the original program before exploring the extension.
