Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black reaches its twentieth anniversary on October 27, following the original album’s release on that date in 2006. UMR and Island issued new expanded editions on October 23, bringing demos, B-sides and concert recordings into the anniversary program.

The deluxe three-LP and three-CD configurations include four unreleased demos and a performance from Paradiso in Amsterdam, recorded February 8, 2007. The accompanying material features photographs by original album photographers Mischa Richter and Alex Lake, with new liner notes from producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi.

Three different views of one album era

The studio album, preliminary recordings and concert material document different stages of the same repertoire. A demo may preserve an earlier arrangement or vocal approach, while a live version places the song within a band’s performance. Those differences give the bonus material a purpose beyond increasing the disc count.

A useful route through the edition is to begin with a familiar album track, then find its related material in the expanded program. That makes changes in phrasing, instrumentation and structure easier to follow than moving through every bonus track without a reference.
