Bruce Liu follows a nocturnal piano path on Lunaris

The Deutsche Grammophon release connects Chopin, Beethoven, Scriabin and John Cage in a programme shaped around night and changing musical time.

Bruce Liu released Lunaris on August 7 through Deutsche Grammophon, with CD, vinyl and digital editions. The piano programme begins with Chopin’s Nocturne in D-flat major, Op. 27 No. 2, and concludes with John Cage’s Dream.

Between those endpoints, Liu includes Beethoven’s Moonlight and Waldstein sonatas, Scriabin’s Fourth Piano Sonata and music by Debussy, Ligeti, Federico Mompou and Agnes Obel. The selection brings different periods into a sequence rather than presenting a single-composer recital.

A programme built around the night

Liu describes the album in terms of the inner world that opens when everyday activity becomes quieter. That is the pianist’s artistic frame for the recording, rather than a claim that the music produces a particular health or sleep benefit.

The release announcement also scheduled a Chopin video premiere for August 12, with Liu joining its live chat. That event belonged to the album’s launch week; it is separate from the ongoing availability of the recorded programme.

Where to begin

The opening nocturne supplies a compact introduction, while the sonatas bring longer musical spans into the collection. Following the complete sequence is a way to encounter the programme’s contrasts without assuming that every piece uses the same idea of night music.
