Billy Joel’s Turnstiles is returning in an expanded fiftieth-anniversary edition on December 11. Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings announced the four-CD and Blu-ray collection on September 29.
The box contains 67 audio tracks, including 54 previously unreleased recordings, plus 32 video performances, 24 of them previously unreleased. Its material spans demos, studio sessions, alternate versions and concert recordings.
A concert film from the album’s era
A centerpiece is Billy Joel Tonight, restored from December 1976 performances filmed at Connecticut College in New London. The concert first reached television as a special in 1977.
The audio collection includes a June 1976 Bottom Line concert, earlier Great American Music Hall material and the previously unheard song Oklahoma. A band demo of James, dated June 12, 1975, accompanied the announcement.
What is scheduled
- Announcement: September 29, 2026.
- Release: December 11, 2026.
- Core box: 4 CDs and a Blu-ray.
- Original album: Turnstiles, 1976.
This is a catalog expansion, with different documents serving different purposes. A demo can illuminate a song’s development, while a concert film places repertoire inside a continuing stage program.
Readers comparing versions should check the official format and track listings rather than treating every anniversary product as identical. The announcement establishes the release plan; it does not make every archival recording part of the original eight-song album.
