The Tom Petty Estate released a video for an extended, newly mixed version of Fooled Again (I Don’t Like It) on October 20. Directed by Alan Bibby, the video draws on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ 1978 appearance on the BBC’s The Old Grey Whistle Test.
The release previews Origins 1971–1978, a box set scheduled for November 6 through UMe. The collection includes the full forty-one-minute television performance, presented with restored audio and an HD presentation.
Ryan Ulyate has remixed and remastered the band’s debut album and its follow-up, You’re Gonna Get It!, from the original multitrack tapes. Fooled Again is among the extended tracks in the expanded program.
A new presentation of historical material
The recording and footage should be understood on their own timelines. This is newly issued archival material, not a new performance by the band. The video uses a fresh visual treatment of older footage alongside the extended mix.
That combination offers a useful comparison between a record’s construction and the way a song is presented on television. Following the arrangement and the visible ensemble can help separate the historical performance from the later editorial choices.
The official announcement outlines the box configurations and the restoration work. Its track list is the clearest guide for readers interested in the complete BBC program rather than only the preview video.
