Kacey Musgraves announced Middle of Nowhere Vol. 2: Tex Mex Tapes on October 23, setting January 15, 2027 as its release date through Lost Highway Records. The sixteen-song collection includes eleven originals and five covers, with four tracks sung entirely in Spanish.
Two previews accompanied the announcement: Weekend in Texas and a version of the Norteño song Mi Tesoro. The album also includes a newly recorded Spanish-language version of Uncertain, TX featuring Intocable.
Following the connections in the repertoire
The release is framed around musical and cultural connections between Texas and Mexico. The combination of originals, covers and a reworked existing song offers three ways into that idea. An original develops new writing, a cover enters an existing tradition, and a different-language version can change the relationship between a melody and its words.
Those are useful distinctions for approaching the project without making assumptions about an entire record from two previews. Comparing the announced collaborators and song credits will be more informative than treating “Tex Mex” as a single uniform sound.
The January date refers to the album, while the two introductory songs were released in October. Keeping those dates separate avoids mistaking the announcement for the arrival of the full collection. The official statement below provides the release links and the artist’s account of the project.
