Brandon Flowers released Thrasher on August 21 through Island Records/Universal Music Canada. The record is his first solo album in more than a decade.
The Killers singer recorded at Nashville’s Historic RCA Studio A with producers Shawn Everett and Jonathan Rado. The musicians named in the announcement include guitarist David Rawlings, pedal-steel player Bruce Bouton and harmonica player Charlie McCoy.
A solo record still has a wider cast
A live performance video for the opening song, Does It Ever Cross Your Mind?, accompanied the release. The label connects the album’s writing to Flowers’ formative years in Nephi, Utah, and to the country music he encountered while growing up.
Those biographical references provide context for the project. They do not make the album an automatic account of every detail of the artist’s life, or establish a single literal meaning for every song.
The recording’s roles are worth separating
A solo album identifies the artist at its centre, but its credits reveal a collaborative production. Producer, songwriter and instrumental contributor are different responsibilities, even when they meet within a familiar voice’s new release.
For listeners arriving through The Killers, the new performance video supplies an immediate introduction. Returning to the complete album then places that opening song within Flowers’ chosen programme, rather than assuming a solo release must reproduce the sound or structure of his band’s records.
