Joe Hisaishi announced a new recording of his Symphonic Suite The Boy and the Heron on August 14. Deutsche Grammophon scheduled the album for November 6, with Hisaishi himself as piano soloist.
The music was recomposed from his score for Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli film. The result is presented as a standalone concert work for piano and orchestra, rather than simply another issue of the original film soundtrack.
A new form for familiar film music
The recording was made in April 2025 with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Hisaishi became the orchestra’s Composer-in-Association in 2024, giving the project a wider institutional connection beyond its screen origins.
The announcement scheduled advance tracks for August 14, September 11 and October 23. It also identified limited coloured-vinyl and picture-disc editions through the label’s store.
Soundtrack and suite are different documents
A film score accompanies a sequence of images and dramatic events. A concert suite has to establish its shape for an audience listening without that continuous visual narrative. The new release’s description makes that change of format the central point of interest.
For listeners who know the film, the practical comparison is therefore between two presentations of related musical material. Recognising a melody is only the starting point; the suite places that material inside a separately organised concert work.
Scheduled release: November 6, 2026 · Deutsche Grammophon · piano and orchestra.
