Unforgettable Grace: Alexandra Trusova’s Record-Breaking “Unstoppable” Routine
Introducing Alexandra “Sasha” Trusova, a Russian figure skater who secured a silver medal at the 2022 Olympics. A video of her performance at the Skate Canada figure skating competition has gone viral on YouTube and has been viewed 12 million times each year over the past three years.
Alexandra is an exceptionally skilled skater who is recognized for leading the technical revolution in women’s figure skating. Previously, quadruple jumps were exclusively performed by male skaters. Female skaters have generally been behind men in terms of jumps.
This discrepancy is not necessarily because women were unable to execute the jumps, but rather because it was deemed “inappropriate.” American skater Theresa Weld was criticized for incorporating a single salchow jump into her routine. Interestingly, the reprimand was not due to technical or safety concerns. Instead, it was because her skirt rose above her knees when she performed the jump, which was considered too risqué. Much has changed since then, and jumps are now a fundamental element of any figure skating program.
Alexandra’s skill in these jumps is likely a key factor in her series of medals over recent years. She has earned four bronze medals, two silver medals, and three gold medals, including one at the World Junior Championships. Now that she is eighteen, it appears that senior titles are likely to follow soon.
Alexandra Vyacheslavovna Trusova was born on June 23, 2004, in Ryazan, Russia. She is the oldest of her parents’ three children, with two younger brothers named Egor and Ivan. Alexandra began her training at the age of four, initially in her hometown. She advanced rapidly and moved to Moscow in 2015 to continue her training.
Just two years later, she competed in the Russian Junior Championships, finishing fourth. A few months afterward, at the Junior Grand Prix final, she scored 73.25 points and set a new junior women’s world record for the short program. Since then, Alexandra has continued to excel, winning medals and expanding the limits of women’s figure skating.
If you want to witness what this talented young athlete can achieve, watch her performance at Skate Canada in 2019. At the start of the video, Alexandra is waiting backstage. Her attire has a Cruella DeVil style, entirely black and white, including her hair.
She skates elegantly onto the ice and moves towards the judges’ panel. Then, in a very charming gesture, she rests her head on the ledge as if she’s weary. Once the music begins, she propels herself onto the ice and starts to perform. Her skating is graceful and appears completely flawless, with the jumps adding an extra level of excitement.
