The Touching Duet Between Michael Bublé and a Sixth Grade Teacher
A rare few can claim to have met one of their idols. Some fortunate individuals receive a golden ticket to the backstage, or navigate through the crowd to secure a handshake and a photo; these moments are incredibly special for fans. However, one fan achieved what countless fans aspire to: perform alongside Michael Bublé in a sold-out arena.
This is precisely what sixth-grade teacher Mrs. Diana Fairbanks accomplished at Michael Bublé’s 2019 arena performance at Oakland’s Oracle Arena. In this heartfelt moment, Fairbanks remains calm amidst the surrounding crowd as Bublé agrees to her duet request. Together, they perform Disney’s “A Whole New World” in a beautiful melodic duet.
Initially, Bublé appears to believe that Fairbanks—who is waving a sign—merely wants to catch his attention and express her admiration (much like most fans would do when so close to him).
He was then amazed to realize that the reverse side of the sign was asking for an on-stage duet with the renowned Canadian singer. The audience had no idea they were about to experience a genuinely remarkable moment.
The audience erupted in applause when he agreed to her request, and Fairbanks showcased her heavenly voice right from the start. Despite his iconic reputation, Bublé reveals in this clip that he is fundamentally like anyone else as he momentarily loses his words during the duet. Nevertheless, he continues to offer superb harmonic backing to Fairbanks, who successfully matches his pitch by the song’s conclusion. They even lock eyes for reassurance as they find the correct pitch together.
Michael Bublé is globally recognized as an American vocal legend. His vast original discography is remarkable on its own, but a key element of Bublé’s charm is his talent for revitalizing forgotten songs and adding his unique twist to them. One of his most beloved covers is Nina Simone’s timeless “Feeling Good,” which 15-year-old fan Sam Hollyman had the opportunity to perform alongside Bublé during his concert at the Birmingham National Indoor Arena.
Interactions with fans are among the most enjoyable and unforeseen experiences at music events. Collaborations with guest artists are lucky surprises, but there is something incredibly exciting about a fan having the opportunity to perform with one of their favorite musicians.
A particularly mesmerizing moment occurred when Yayo Sanchez, wearing makeup inspired by Kiss’ Gene Simmons, was called on stage by Dave Grohl during a Foo Fighters concert to play guitar. Not only did young Sanchez flawlessly perform their iconic song “Monkey Wrench,” but following an electrifying performance, Grohl was left speechless and started bowing to the young guitarist. It would be difficult to find higher praise elsewhere.
