Michael Bublé Surprises a Sixth-Grade Teacher with a Duet Performance
Not many people have the chance to say they’ve met one of their idols. Some of us manage to get a golden ticket backstage, or navigate through the crowd for a handshake and a photo; these are moments that fans truly treasure. However, one fan did what countless others only dream of: share a stage with Michael Bublé in a packed arena.
This is exactly what sixth-grade teacher Mrs. Diana Fairbanks did during Michael Bublé’s performance at Oakland’s Oracle Arena in 2019. In this touching moment, Fairbanks appears calm and unfazed by the crowd around her as Bublé agrees to her request for a duet. The two then go on to sing Disney’s “A Whole New World” together in a beautiful melodic performance.
At first, Bublé seems to believe that Fairbanks – who is holding up a sign – is simply trying to get his attention and show her admiration (as most fans would do if they were that close to him).
He was later amazed to discover the other side of the sign, which requested an on-stage duet with the legendary Canadian singer. Little did the audience know, they were about to witness a truly remarkable moment.
The crowd erupted with cheers as he accepted her offer, and Fairbanks showcased her angelic voice right from the start. Despite his legendary status, Bublé shows us in this clip that, at heart, he’s just like everyone else as he stumbles over his words during the duet. This doesn’t stop him from providing excellent harmonic support to Fairbanks, who managed to match Bublé’s pitch by the end of the song. They even share a look of reassurance as they discover the right pitch together.
Michael Bublé is known worldwide as an iconic American vocalist. His impressive original discography is enough on its own, but one of the most magical aspects of Bublé’s talent is his ability to breathe new life into overlooked songs of the past and add his own touch. One of the most beloved covers he revived is Nina Simone’s classic “Feeling Good,” which 15-year-old fan Sam Hollyman had the opportunity to perform with Bublé during his show at the Birmingham National Indoor Arena.
Fan interactions often provide some of the best and most unexpected moments we can experience at music shows. Guest collaborations are a delightful surprise, but there is something uniquely thrilling about a fan having the chance to perform with one of their favorite artists.
One particularly mesmerizing moment occurred when Yayo Sanchez, dressed in makeup inspired by Kiss’ Gene Simmons, was invited on stage by Dave Grohl during a Foo Fighters concert to play guitar. Not only did young Sanchez perform their classic hit “Monkey Wrench” flawlessly, but after an electrifying performance, Grohl was left speechless and began bowing to the young guitarist. It’s hard to imagine better praise than that.
