A Father’s Day to Remember: Rory and Indy Feek’s Harmonious Duet
Heartwarming tales often depict the victory over adversity, and the emotional narrative of Rory and Indy Feek performing Shel Silverstein’s “Papa What If” is deeply anchored in real-life sorrow. Rory Feek, initially recognized in Nashville for his songwriting and sporadic country gigs, embarked on a new journey when he married Joey Martin in 2002 after a quick engagement, despite both maintaining their individual careers.
Rory had a hand in crafting Blake Shelton’s hit “Some Beach,” and Joey had signed with Sony. It was in 2008 that they began their collaborative venture as Rory and Joey. Their family grew with the arrival of Indiana in 2014, who was born with Down Syndrome. Tragically, Joey passed away in 2016, following a two-year battle with cervical cancer.
On the 19th of June, 2022, Rory uploaded a touching video capturing the moment 10-year-old Indiana wished him a Happy Father’s Day, setting the tone for his wish to extend Father’s Day greetings to all dads and share a heartfelt three-minute video featuring himself and Indy, culminating in Indy expressing her love for her father.
The musical partnership of Rory and Joey was ignited by an opportunity to compete in the “CMT Can You Duet” in 2008, which led to their notable third-place finish and their debut album. Their music found a home on the country charts and cultivated a strong fan base. Their third album, “His and Hers,” included the emotionally charged “When I’m Gone,” inspired by songwriter Sandy Lawrence’s own experiences with loss.
The “When I’m Gone” video, with Joey at its heart, became an poignant echo of their lives, with Rory finding solace and a lasting connection to Joey through the song. Music remained a comforting presence for Rory, especially in moments shared with Indiana, who took an interest in her mother’s music from a young age.

Music became a significant part of Rory and Joey’s daily lives, illustrated by their heartfelt performances, such as “Papa What If.” As a single father, Rory leaned on his extended family for support in raising Indiana, who is educated at home in a unique community setting.
Rory’s path after Joey’s death has been paved with creative endeavors, including the publication of memoirs, children’s books, and the documentary series “This Life I Live.” In June 2021, he released “Gentle Man,” his first solo album since Joey’s passing, continuing his story of music and resilience.
