The Gibb family is incredibly talented, with the Bee Gees’ Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb making a big mark on music charts for years. It’s not just the brothers who are talented, as seen when Samantha Gibb, Maurice’s 34-year-old daughter, joined her uncle Barry to perform the Bee Gees hit “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?” on stage.
Samantha appeared with Barry at the Wells Fargo Centre in Philadelphia on May 19, 2014, for a heartfelt duet. They hugged before starting, and Barry introduced the song by saying, “We’re going to sing a song that is our favourite, and certainly one of her dad’s favourites, and we hope you like it.”
This performance felt like a tribute to Maurice, who passed away suddenly at 53 on January 12, 2003. Samantha started with Skeeter Davis’s “The End of the World,” a song about missing someone dear, showing her amazing talent. Barry then joined in with “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?”, and Samantha sang the second verse with a soulful touch. Together, they made the chorus something special. There’s also a notable performance of this song by the Bee Gees on April 17, 2001, at the Manhattan Center.
Samantha, now based in Nashville, has started her own music career. She teamed up with Lazaro Rodriguez in 2004 and has been releasing her music and writing for others since then.
The song “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” is an important part of Bee Gees history, being their first number one hit in the US. Released in 1971 as part of the Trafalgar album, it was originally written by Barry and Robin Gibb in August 1970, with Maurice later getting credit on the 2009 album Ultimate Bee Gees.
The song was recorded on January 28, 1971, in London. Robin said it was done in about an hour, which is impressive given the quality of the performance and its success on the charts.
